The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ March 31, 2008 Dorothy Donohoe died March 22, 2008, in Pueblo, Colo. She died peacefully at the home of her daughter, Susan Ritter, with two of her children at her side after a brief bout with brain cancer. She was born Dec. 17, 1922, in Akron, Ohio, and raised there. She became a registered nurse and came to Arizona to work for the Indian Health Service in the Grand Canyon area at the end of WWII. She got her bachelor's degree at Arizona State College at Flagstaff where she met her husband, Thomas L. Donohoe, from Douglas. They were married Sept. 4, 1948, and drove directly to St Louis where Tom began dental school at St. Louis University. During that time she was a public health nurse with the city of St. Louis. They returned to Arizona after he graduated and lived in Tucson. She earned her master's degree in education and published manuscripts on "Flouridation" and "Harmful Effects of Sugar." When Tom retired in 1987, they moved to Pinetop. Dorothy continued to live in her beloved Pinetop after Tom passed away September 1997. They were active in the St. Mary's of the Angels Catholic Church. Dorothy loved Pinetop, Blue Ridge football games, watching the Diamondbacks, taking art courses at NPC, playing bridge, fishing, White Mountain Women's Club, eating out especially at Eddie's for breakfast, Charlie Clarks, Annie's, Christmas Tree, Munich Haus and La Casita. She loved playing '40s music. But most of all she really cherished her friends and family. She was most proud of the two gold medals she earned at the Sierra Vista Senior Olympics February 2007 for swimming 50-meter freestyle and breast stoke. She is survived by her children, Ann Marie Donohoe Lasswell, Susan Ritter, Kathy Hungate, John Donohoe, Mary Donohoe; nine grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by his parents, William and Meta Catherine Link, son Thomas William and husband Tom Donohoe. A burial Mass was held Monday, March 31, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Phoenix. A memorial service will be held this summer in Pinetop.
