BOYER, Wilbert Ross


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ March 20, 2008 Wilbert Ross Boyer, 70, of Show Low died March 14, 2008, in Tucson. He was born July 13, 1937, in White Township, Indiana County, Pa., to Ira Calvin and Mary Katherine (Walker) Boyer. He spent his youth on the family farm. His first schooling was in a one-room schoolhouse. After graduating from Indiana Joint High School in 1955, Wilbert joined the U.S. Air Force. He served as a jet aircraft and engine mechanic with the 6511th Parachute Test Group. While stationed at El Centro, Calif., he met his wife, Mary Ellen Hinshaw. They married June 20, 1959, at the Holtville (Calif.) United Methodist Church. Upon Wilbert's discharge, the couple lived in Indiana, Pa., for three years, then moved to San Diego, Calif., where Wilbert attended Electronic Technical Institute. In 1964, he went to work at North Island Naval Air Station as an electronics technician. At the time of his retirement in 1993, he was a computer technician and programmer involved with designing and building prototypes for various test programs. Wilbert is survived by his wife; two sons, David (Lori) of San Diego, Calif., and Robert of Pleasant Hill, Calif.; daughter-in-law Anne Boyer; four grandchildren, Christopher, Kenneth, Lene and Colby; two sisters, Mary Gilbert of Marion Center, Pa., and Jane Dixson of Indiana, Pa.; four brothers, Ira, Wallace and Robert of Indiana, Pa., and John of Commodore, Pa.; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a son, Richard, his parents and three brothers. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and an active member of the White Mountain Square Dance Club and White Mountain United Methodist Church in Show Low, where memorial services were held Thursday, March 20.
