Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, Arizona September 10, 1987, page 2-A There were no services for Mary Ellen Callahan, 73, of Issaquah, Wash., who died Aug. 27 at her home. Mrs. Callahan was a former Wickenburg resident. She was born Aug. 12, 1914 in Grinnell, Iowa, to Guy and Mable Nichols. She moved as a child with her family to Peekskill, N.Y., where she graduated from Peekskill High School. She earned a teaching certificate from Ethical Culture College in New York City, and taught first grade for 30 years in the Yorktown School district, Yorktown Height, N.Y. She married Samuel L. Callahan in June, 1936 in Scarsdale, N.Y. At the time of the couple’s retirement they moved to Wickenburg. Samuel Callahan passed away in March, 1985 and Mrs. Callahan returned to the Issaquah area to be near her niece and family. Survivors include two nieces, Marcia D. Messe of Issaquah and Melissa Rohl of Englewood, Fla.; a sister, Nell Davenport, of Englewood; and three grand-nephews. The family asks that contributions in her memory be made to Swedish Hospital Sustaining Care, 747 Summit Ave., Seattle, Wash., 98104, or any local hospice program. All arrangements were by Flintoft’s Issaquah Funeral Home.
