SMITH, Robert Russell


Robert Russell Smith, a resident of Prescott since 1990, passed away on Jan. 8, 2004, at the age of 75. A retired attorney and former Whittier, Calif., resident, he was predeceased in 2001 by his loving wife of 49 years, Helen (Wittman) Smith. Robert was born in Toledo, Ohio, on Jan. 22, 1928, and raised in El Monte, Calif., the son of Bessie (Russell) and William Harold Smith. A Navy veteran, he loved running and was a member of the track team in college. He and Helen met as college freshman and were married the day after their graduation from Whittier College in June 1952. Robert went on to graduate from Stanford University Law School. A brilliant and respected lawyer, he started his law career as House Counsel for Liberty Clopton & Penney, and with Herlihy & Herlihy, all in Los Angeles. In 1963, he became a partner in Oshman, Brownfield and Smith, retiring in 1990. He is survived by his son, Mark Spencer Smith; and daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Michael Holley; granddaughters, Hannah and Abby, all of California. Robert was a most compassionate and generous man, devoted to his family and numerous life-long friends; he will be deeply missed. A memorial service will be on a date to be announced at Whittier College Chapel, Whittier, Calif. The family suggests any memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, Arizona Division, 2724 E. Larkin, Suite #9, Flagstaff, AZ 86001.
