SUMMERS, Nellie Grace

The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ March 24, 2008 Nellie Grace Rollo Summers completed her earthly mission and returned to her heavenly home March 19, 2008. "We know she has been welcomed by her Savior, Jesus Christ, whom she loved and served throughout her life." She has joined her beloved husband James Carmen "Doc" Summers, sons Thomas Allen "TA" and James Clinton "Jim" and daughter Leumas along with her parents, brothers and sisters. Through her extensive genealogy and temple work, she has many other happy souls there to greet her and welcome her home. Nellie was born Dec. 31, 1915, in Lovelady, Texas, to Mary Maude and Austin Rollo. She was the sixth of eight children. Her family moved to Arizona when she was five. While there, she and her family were baptized into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Nellie made it her lifetime work to serve in her Lord's church. After high school graduation she married "Doc" and moved to the Summers Ranch in New Mexico where they had two daughters and two sons. After Doc's passing, Nellie married M.J. "Bill" Slade and they had one daughter. Nellie also adopted and raised three grandsons as sons after her daughter Leumas died. In all Nellie raised eight children, had 20 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She is survived by daughters Carma Nell and Billie; sons Jeff, Sam and Travis; along with their spouses, children and grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Virginia; nieces, nephews, two brother-in-laws and many dear friends. Nellie served missions at the Family History Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, and also served in the Salt Lake and Boise Idaho Temples. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, at the Springerville Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burnham Mortuary of Eagar handled the arrangements for the family.
