Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary in Glendale for J. Roach Roberts, 93, of Wickenburg.
The Rev. Kim Ellithorpe of Foursquare Gospel Church will officiate, together with a chaplain from the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Mr. Roberts died March 20 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Phoenix.
He was born March 1, 1895 in Phoenix, and was a lifelong resident of Arizona. He had lived in Wickenburg for 36 years.
He was a lifelong cowboy, retired livestock inspector and cattle rancher.
He was the nephew to “Coke” Roberts, who was a pioneer developer of the American Quarter Horse and who is a member of the Cowboy Hall of Fame.
Mr. Roberts was a veteran of World War I, serving in the U. S. Army, and a past commander of the VFW Post in Wickenburg.
He served as the grand marshal of two Gold Rush Days parades, the most recent in 1987.
He was honored annually at the Arizona National Livestock Show pioneer reunion, and served as precinct committeeman for the Rincon precinct for many years.
Survivors include five sons, Bob, of Los Angeles, Earl, of Scottsdale, Vern, of Glendale, Ted, of Tucson, and Larry, of Wickenburg; three daughters, Jane Woolbright of Kennewick, Wash., Carolyn McGee of Mesa, and Patsy Ellithorpe of Tujuga, Calif.; a sister, Henrietta Maddox, of Huntington Beach, Calif.; 24 grandchildren, including Diane Lewis of Wickenburg; and seven great-grandchildren.
In Lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to the Arizona National Livestock Show Pioneer Book Fund, 1826 W. McDowell, Phoenix, 85007.
