Viola Calhoun, 89, of Winslow, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at her home.
Mrs. Calhoun was born July 8, 1921, to Benjamin Fred Pulliam and Sara Adaline (Addie Shelton) Pulliam. She was the next to the youngest of six children. She attended school in Bellview and Clovis, N.M. She moved to Clovis in 1930 with her parents and was married to Jake Robinson Calhoun on Aug. 10, 1939, in Fort Sumner, N.M. She and her husband lived in Bovina, Texas, working the family farm. They moved to Amarillo, Texas, in 1940 and had their first child, Gary Don, in February 1942. Shortly after his birth, they moved to Winslow, where Mr. Calhoun began working for AT & SF Railroads. They had their second child, Carolyn Sue, in 1944.
Mrs. Calhoun was an exceptionally loving wife and mother. She became proficient in repairing radios, phonographs and other electronic devices. She and her husband ran Winslow Radio and Electronics from the late 1940s until 1996, when Mr. Calhoun died. The two built their family home themselves, and she resided there until her death. Being the devoted mother that she was, she helped coach Little League baseball and was active in the program for many years.
She was passionate about her crafts and loved to knit, crochet, sew, doing needlepoint, and just simply designing little containers -- from Barbie furniture to just boxes to keep things in. Even though she was legally blind for more than 17 years, she managed to live on her own and still mend clothing and make small crafts by feel.
Mrs. Calhoun leaves behind her son, Gary D. Calhoun (Connie) of Winslow; her daughter, Carolyn Sue Waugh of Phoenix; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a brand new great-great-granddaughter.
She was preceeded in death by her husband of 66 years, Jake Robinson Calhoun, in 1996; her parents; brothers Marvin Fryar, Cecil Fryar and Oscar Fryar; and sisters Jewel (Dude) Wright, and Imogne (Jean) Coleman. She also leaves behind many nephews and nieces who she enjoyed visiting with by phone right up to the day she died.
Visitation will be Tuesday, 5 to 7 p.m., at Greer's Mortuary in Winslow, with the funeral Wednesday, at 1 p.m., at the Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Desert View Cemetery.
