Erna Mae Newman, 68, of Lakeside, loving mother and grandmother, died Feb. 11, 2008. She was born in Bisbee in 1940 to Morris and Lora Nelson.
She was raised in Southern Arizona and graduated from Bisbee high School in 1968. Erna became a licensed barber and for 13 years worked in Show Low.
In 1959 Erna married John Raasveld, and they were blessed with two children, Marie and Shawn. Their marriage ended in 1972, and it was then that she married Calvin Newman and they were sealed in the Mesa, Arizona Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1996. She was again blessed with two more children, Kevin and Crystal.
Erna was a lifetime member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in the Mesa, Arizona Temple for four years and for six years in the Snowflake, Arizona Temple.
Her greatest joy was being with her family. She loved to read and was always learning. She enjoyed working with people and making new friends. For five years Erna has worked with her family at Khadijas in Wagon Wheel.
She is survived by her husband, Calvin Newman of Lakeside; children Marie (Bart) Norton of Holbrook, Shawn (Cindy) Raasveld of Burns Lake, Canada, Kevin (Dena) Newman of Maricopa, Crystal Newman, Lakeside, and Jaime Garcia of Lakeside; six grandchildren and one great-grandson; four brothers, Carlos (Hesteran) Nelson of Douglas, Hubbert (Ilene) Nelson of California, Chuck (Barbara) Nelson of Tampa Bay, Fla., and Ferrel Nelson of Show Low.
A visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, at the Owens Mortuary, 320 N. 9th St., Show Low. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 18, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lakeside Stake Center, with a visitation one hour prior. Interment will be at the Lakeside Cemetery.
