BASSETT, Vilas (Sam)

The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ January 18, 2008 Vilas "Sam" Bassett, 68, died Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, in Phoenix. He was born Nov. 3, 1939, to the late Wayne and Veronica (Dwyer) Bassett in Plattsburgh, N.Y. Sam served in the U.S. Air Force for three years in Turkey. He worked as a prison guard for 25 years in New York before retiring in 1986. He also was a school bus driver for 18 years. He loved to travel, ride his motorcycle and to give flowers to his companion, Myrna. Sam was a friend to everyone, and he considered Arizona his home. He is survived by his companion of 16 years, Myrna Ashcraft; one brother, Gerrard (Judy) Bassett; and one nephew, James Bassett. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Owens Mortuary, Chapel 409 N. 1st Ave., in Holbrook with visitation one-hour prior.
