Longtime Northern Arizona University supporter Harold Leaumont Elliott, 85, died on Dec. 24 in Yuma.
Elliott was born to F.E. Elliott I and Olga Leaumont Elliott in Somerton on June 28, 1925. He came to what was then the Arizona State Teachers College in 1943 for Navy V-12 college training. He returned to NAU after his military service, earning a bachelor's degree in 1949 and master's degree in 1951. As an undergraduate, he was a member of the NAU football, baseball and wrestling teams.
Elliott worked as a math teacher and coach at Kingman High School, then as vice principal and principal of Kofa High School in Yuma. He retired from public education in 1975 and shifted his efforts to his investment company.
Elliott worked with the NAU Alumni Association, while his wife, Marion, also an NAU alum, served on the NAU Foundation board. The Elliotts established several endowed funds and scholarships at NAU, and Mr. Elliott played an integral role in building partnerships with Arizona Western College and Yavapai College, paving the way for today's 2+2 programs and the establishment of NAU campuses in Yuma and Prescott Valley.
The Elliotts received NAU Alumni Achievement Awards, Alumni Service Awards, Centennial Awards, the Joe and Marie Rolle Spirit of NAU Award, and the Arizona Board of Regents Award for Outstanding Service to Education. Mr. Elliott received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from NAU in 2006. He was also a respected civic leader in Yuma.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marion; daughters Diana (William) Austin of Roanoke, Va., and Linda (Randall) Elliott-Nelson of Yuma; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; and two nephews.
Services will be on Saturday in Yuma.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to any of the Harold and Marion Elliott scholarships established at NAU's Flagstaff, Yuma and Prescott campuses through the NAU Foundation, P.O. Box 4094, Flagstaff, AZ 86011.
