Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa May 29, 2004 MESA, Ariz. -- Carol Vriezelaar, 86, formerly of Monroe, Iowa died of a stroke and complications from Alzheimer's Disease in Mesa, Ariz., on May 25, 2004. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Monroe. Burial will be at Silent City Cemetery. Her body was cremated. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Monroe is handling arrangements. A fellowship luncheon will be held for friends and family at the First Baptist Church following the graveside ceremony. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations in her name be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Desert Southwest Chapter, 1028 E. McDowell Road, Phoenix, Ariz. 85006. The daughter of Ulrie and Mabel (LeGrand) Clevenger, she was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Monroe. She enjoyed racing her pony, playing softball, playing in the Monroe High School band and singing in school and church choirs. During World War II, she enrolled in the Curtis-Wright Cadette Training Program designed to replace technicians being drafted into military service. From 1943 to 1945 she worked in the C-W aircraft engineering lab and learned to fly small aircraft in Buffalo, N. Y. Once the war ended, she returned to a job in Monroe. She married James Vriezelaar July 4, 1946. Mrs. Vriezelaar was a homemaker and volunteer in community service. She went back to work in 1959 as bookkeeper and office manager of her husband's auto dealership in Waverly until their mutual retirement in 1981. She and her husband became annual visitors to Arizona, settling in Queen Valley in 1984. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease and entered into adult care assisted living in Mesa, Ariz., in 1999. She is survived by her husband; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Clint of Mesa, Ariz., and Kent and Collene of Sioux City; two grandsons; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Maxine Vander Ploeg, and brothers, Lyle and Lloyd.
