One of Springerville's best known and most respected business men, Martin L. Hay, died at his home of lung and liver cancer Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at the age of 84.
He and son Marty Hay owned and operated the Sport Shack, 329 E. Main Street, in Springerville for 33 years. Almost everyone in the area knew how he liked to tie flies and tell people about the great outdoors.
Martin was born in Lubbock, Texas, Jan. 8, 1925, to Martin Luther Hay and Mary T. Evans. He joined the U.S. Army when he was 19 and served from 1944 to 1946 in Europe.
He graduated from the University of Houston in 1949. He married B. June Miller in 1944. He later owned several restaurants, grocery stores and other businesses. He moved to Springerville permanently in 1972 and opened the Sport Shack.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Billy June Hay; son Martin (Marty) L. Hay II; daughter Beth (Jonathan Perpich) Conlin; four grandchildren, April (Dana) Plowman, John Conlin, Zachary Hay and Chelsae Hay; three stepgrandchildren, Allyssa, Candaelynn and MacKenna; and great-grandchildren Amy Plowman and Logan Plowman.
He was preceded in death by his youngest son, George R. Hay.
Graveside services for the family were held Tuesday, Nov. 3, at the Eagar Cemetery.
