DUNLAP, Harry Beatty, Jr.

Harry Beatty Dunlap Jr., age 90, of Iowa City, Iowa died Thursday, October 28, 2004 at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Palliative Care Unit with his family by his side. Memorial services will be at 5:00 p.m. Monday, November 1, 2004 at Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. A greeting time will be from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Community Foundation of Johnson County (to establish an ongoing Chamber of Commerce Award recognizing Economic Development in Johnson County) or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Harry was born on January 18, 1914 in Des Moines, Iowa the son of Harry Beatty and Ethel Bailey Dunlap. He graduated from Ames High School and Iowa State University in 1939, with a degree in Industrial Science Plant Management & time Studies. On December 20, 1939, he married Betty Norris in Ames, Iowa. Harry served his country during World War II as a Major in the US Army Field Artillery. Harry and his family moved to Iowa City in 1946 and established the Oldsmobile dealership known as Dunlap’s Motor Sales, Inc. During his thirty-three years in business, he very active in civic affairs: Jaycees, Chamber of Commerce serving as president in 1955, Boy Scouts and Community Chest. He was the outstanding “Young Man of 1949". He is a past president of both the Downtown Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts Area Council, and a recipient of the Boy Scouts Silver Beaver Award. He served on various committees and commissions including the Airport Commission and the Economic Development Committee. He helped to bring Proctor and Gamble, Victor Metals and Ozark Airlines to Iowa City. In 1979, he and Betty moved to Green Valley, Arizona where he enjoyed woodworking, building furniture, photography, genealogy and the good weather. He returned to Iowa City in December of 2002 and resided at Melrose Meadows where he was always ready for a game of Scrabble. His family includes his children, Ann Romero and her husband, Richard of Seattle, Susan Schmidt and husband, David of Iowa City, Jane Carver of Bettendorf and Ty Dunlap and his wife, Karen of Coralville, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, one brother, Norman Dunlap and his wife, Jackie of Green Valley, Arizona, and a special friend, Geri Mapes of Green Valley, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, two brothers and his wife, Betty, of 58 years. Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service is caring for Harry’s family and his services.
