Laurel Nadine Bates, 83, of Phoenix, Ariz., died of cancer there Wednesday. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Mingo United Methodist Church, of which she was a member. Burial will be at Graham Cemetery near there. Mrs. Bates was born in Mingo, Iowa and had lived there until moving to Arizona in 1987. She was the retired owner and operator of the Mingo Meat Locker. Among survivors are her husband, Elnathan; a son, Howard Maxwell, Jr. of Altoona; four daughters, Kay Gerhart and Jean Reece, both of Des Moines, Alice Lundberg of Derby and Charlene Scott of Phoenix; a brother, Delmar Beard of Newton; a sister, Verla Shill of Nevada; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Friends may call after 1 p.m. Tuesday at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home in Newton, where the family will be present from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to her church.
