Robert Wayne Metzger went to join his Lord and maker May 11, 2009, and made an easy crossing surrounded by his loved ones. He was born July 24, 1930, in Globe to Robert George (Curley) and Verdie Corn Metzger.
Wayne moved to Winslow in his junior year of high school and graduated in 1948. He also served in the army during the Korean Conflict.
He was a railroad engineer for 44 years, chaired eight rodeos as a member of the Jaycee's and served 20 years on the Winslow School Board. He also coached Little League.
Service was his middle name. His sense of humor was enjoyed by everyone. He was quite a jokester.
Wayne loved his wife and children but reached out to help everyone he came in contact with. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.
Wayne was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother Terry.
Wayne is survived by his wife Georgia of 46 years: children Bill (Cathy) Metzger of Peoria, Mike (Carol) MacLean of Peoria, Leellen (Kevin) Russell of Flagstaff, Jim (Lisa) MacLean of Winslow and Robert D. Metzger of Winslow; sister Wanda Kingan of Phoenix; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
A celebration of his life will be held at the First Baptist Church Saturday, May 23, at 10 a.m. Greer's Mortuary is in charge of the arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to either Odyssey Healthcare at 8977 W. Athens St., Suite 120, Peoria, AZ or Casa De La Luz Hospice at 400 W. Magee Road, Tucson, AZ 85704.
