The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ May 21, 2009 Catherine "Katie" Hofmann Mangum, 97, died May 18, 2009, in Vernon, where she had resided for the last few years. She was born Aug. 29, 1911, in the Little Colorado Canyon above Round Valley to Fred and Rose Hofmann. She married Thomas Noble Mangum in 1933. She leaves her daughters, Louise Adams of Longmont, Colo.; Margaret Ellen (Bob) Baca of Denver, Colo.; and Barbara (Jason) Dougharty of Show Low; sons Thomas (Sue) Mangum of Pinedale; Douglas (Grace) Mangum of Thatcher and Bart (Dorothy) Mangum of Gallup, N.M.; 34 grandchildren, 82 great-grandchildren and additional great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband on July 8, 1986, daughter Rosanna Mangum Willess, son-in-law Doyle Willess, great-grandson Scotty Richards, daughter-in-law Gloria Waite Mangum, three sisters and one brother. Katie is known for her great love for children and the beauties of nature - she even loved bugs. Most of her life was spent in and around Round Valley. For many years she lived in Nutrioso, where she served as postmistress for 19 years. Prior to her move to Vernon, she spent several years with daughter Louise in Boulder County, where she made many new and good friends. There she was recognized for her constant cheerfulness and gentle smiles. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 30, at 10 a.m. at the Amity Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on School Bus Road in Eagar. Visitation will be at the church one hour prior to the service (9-9:45 a.m.). Interment will follow at the Eagar Cemetery. Burnham Mortuary of Eagar handled arrangements.
