Amy I. Fortune, 77, of Montezuma, Iowa formerly of Newton, died Thursday, April 8, 2010, at the Banner Gardens Hospice House in Mesa, Ariz. A funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, April 15, at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Gary Marzolf of the First United Methodist Church in Newton officiating. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 14, at the funeral home. Burial will be at Newton Union Cemetery in Newton.
The daughter of Tom and Amy (Berg) Scott, Amy was born July 15, 1932, in Melcher, Iowa. She graduated from Melcher High School in Melcher in 1950, and on June 29, 1951, she was united in marriage to James H. “Jim” Fortune in Des Moines, Iowa. Amy owned and operated Queens Printing for many years. In her early working years, she had worked in the payroll department for the Maytag Company until she began her family. Later she worked for Maples Chevrolet and the Newton Daily News.
Amy loved spending the last 21 winters in Arizona, where she could play golf and make quilts. In the summers, she enjoyed their home at Lake Ponderosa where she could fish from her paddle boat or off the shoreline. Amy had been a resident of Lake Ponderosa in rural Montezuma for the last 21 years. She lived in Newton from 1951-1989. Memorials may be designated to the Amy Fortune Memorial Fund and left at the funeral home.
She is survived by her husband, Jim of Montezuma; two sons, Mike (Barb) Fortune of Pleasant Hill and Patrick Fortune of Newton and his special friend, Cathy Crady of Colfax; two granddaughters, Michelle Fortune and Lauren Fortune; and three sisters, Vivian Scott and Hannah (Herman) Verwers, all of Melcher, and Ruth Mays of Mesa, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Margaret Hyatt and Naomi Kirfman; and three brothers, Henry, Kenneth and John Scott.
