The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ March 6, 2009 Sam "Sammie" Evelyn Lee died Feb. 19, 2009, at her home in Holbrook. She was born March 16, 1918, in Princeton, Ark., to the late Sam and Nancy (Cheatum) Turner, and she was the oldest of seven children. Sammie had a great love for the Hopi Tribe. Doing a tremendous amount of genealogy for them, she was instrumental in helping preserve the Hopi culture for the future generations to come. She was a schoolteacher who loved to make handmade quilts. Sammie worked at the Trading Post in Keams Canyon with many of her friends. During her time while serving her country in the U.S. Navy she worked in the Fleet Post Office in Hawaii after the bombing of Pearl Harbor serving as the port mistress. She is survived by son Richard Henry Lee; two stepsons, Kenneth Ray Lee and Jack Randolph Lee; four grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held 11 a.m.. Saturday, March 7, at the American Legion Hall, 219 E. Iowa, in Holbrook. The family has requested that donations be made in honor of Sam "Sammie" Evelyn Lee to the RTA Hospice and Palliative Care, 1789 W. Commerce Dr., Lakeside, AZ 85929.
