Barbara J. Hunter, 85, died peacefully Dec. 13, 2010, in her sleep at her home in Springerville. Barbara was born June 23, 1925, in Medford, Ore. She was a real estate broker and founder of Hunter Realty.
She was passionate about nature and gardening, hiking and backpacking, competing as a swimmer in the Senior Olympics and the Davis/Monthan Triathlon. An avid adventurer and world traveler, she visited 16 countries in Europe, the Middle East and South America. She was the first woman to be mayor of Springerville, was a past president of the chamber of commerce and a past member of the White Mountain Community Board. She was active in the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and in local charities, creating an “Evening With the Arts.” Barbara was a voracious reader. She was known to her grandchildren and many of their friends as “Gram” and to many others as “the Energizer Bunny.”
Barbara is survived by her son, Curtis Simpson (Sandy) of Auburn, Calif.; daughters: Laura Nuttall (Clint) of Eagar, and Susan Milici (Jody) of Tucson; sister Carmen Davis of San Diego, Calif.; eight grandchildren: Mike Nuttall, Glenn Simpson, Jennifer Estrada, Jake Nuttall, Jason Milici, Josh Nuttall, Jonathon Simpson, and Elisabeth Simpson; 10 great-grandchildren: Michael and Kyle Nuttall, Luke, Rebecca and Vincent Estrada, Hailie and Dylan Nuttall, Kameryn Nuttall, and August and Miette Simpson; nephew Joseph Milici of Shelton, Conn., and niece Calista Davis of San Diego, Calif.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at Burnham Mortuary, 535 N. Main St. in Eagar.
