Ray Neal Phillips, 82, of Clarkdale, died April 29, 2005. He was born in Harlem, Ga., on April 1, 1923.
He attended high school in Georgia and two years of college in Augusta. During World War II he served in the U.S. Marines and later the National Guard in Seattle.
Mr. Phillips retired in June from Evergreen Electric & Plumbing in sales after 20 years. He was a member of the American Baptist Church on the Clarkdale Reservation and he took two years off from work to build the Bethany Baptist Church on the Reservation. Mr. Phillips helped to write the American Baptist Teaching Curriculum, he taught Sunday School throughout his life and worked with youth programs.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane Ewers Phillips; two sons: Kevin Phillips, of Clarkdale, and Tracy Phillips, of Chandler; daughters-in-law: Betty Phillips and Christine Phillips; Brother-in law Rolo Ewers, of Tasco, Kansas; sisters-in-law Thelma Kaiser of Glendale, Deline Whitworth, of Deming, N.M.; four grandchildren: Samantha Ann, Kimberly Sue, Randi Catherine and Colin Phillips.
A memorial service will be May 7 at 10 a.m. at the Bethany Baptist Church located on the Yavapai-Apache Reservation in Clarkdale.
