EDWARDS, Walter V. (Dr.), Jr.


The Verde Independent, Cottonwood, AZ May 21, 2005 Dr. Walter V. Edwards Jr., of Verde Village, Cottonwood, died May 17, 2005. He was born Oct. 3, 1916, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and attended Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pa. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Edwards served as a medical officer in a field hospital in France and Germany during World War II. After the war, he worked as a physician at the Jerome Hospital, and then at the Marcus J. Lawrence Hospital in Cottonwood, during which time he served in the Arizona State Legislature. Then in 1955, he moved to Phoenix where he worked for 12 years as medical director for the State Compensation Fund. His last medical practice was with the Occupational Medical Clinic in Phoenix. Upon retirement in 1981, he returned to the Cottonwood area he loved. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Louise; three sons and a daughter, Walter V. Edwards III, of Alexandria, Va., David R. Edwards, of Tucson, Michael A. Edwards, of Phoenix, and Karen Aileen Layfield, of Corpus Christi, Texas; six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Private family services will be held. Westcott Funeral Home was entrusted with these arrangements.
