SHAW, Fred Charles


The Verde Independent, Cottonwood, AZ May 21, 2005 Fred Charles Shaw, 88, of Cottonwood, died May 17, 2005. He was born Dec. 1, 1916, in Seattle to Fred Charles and Ruth B. (Church) Shaw. He lived in Cottonwood for over 30 years. Fred graduated from Everett, Wash., High School in 1936. In February 1938, he married Florence Cushman, daughter of Edwin and Flora Agnes (Bowie) Cushman in Everett. They raised their family of boys in Everett, Edmonds and Mt. Vernon, Wash. After the boys had grown they moved to Cottonwood and owned Marilyn's Hallmark Shop and a second Hallmark Shop in Page. After retirement he enjoyed fishing, rock collecting and visiting with his friends. Over the years Fred had been active in Sea Scouts, Boy Scouts, Verde Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Cottonwood Fire marshall, lapidary instructor at the local college in Cottonwood and the Verde Valley Gem & Mineral Show. Fred was a member of the American Legion in Edmonds, Wash., and Cottonwood, Mingus Rock and Gem Club, Sedona Rock and Gem Club, charter member of Maplewood Rock and Gem Club, Edmonds, Wash., and Clarkdale's Elks. He was preceded in death by his wife, Florence in 1999 after 61 years of marriage, an infant son James and his parents. He is survived by his sons Clifford D., Fred R., and William R. Shaw; a sister Ruth (Shaw) Zabriskie and her husband Eugene; nine grandchildren Michael, Paul, Lawrence, Kelli, Kristine, Cory, David, Theresa and Chrissy and 13 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be May 24 at 2 p.m. at Mountain View United Methodist Church, 901 S. 12th St., Cottonwood. Memorials may be given to your favorite charity. Westcott Funeral Home assisted the family with these arrangements.
