Edmond Lee Atkeson died on Jan. 27, 2011, of heart failure. He was 62 years old. He lived in Chino Valley, Ariz., for the past 11 years.
Ed was born in San Bernardino, Calif., and grew up in California and Oregon. He served in the U.S. Army in the Infantry and Military Police and was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in Vietnam. He was a deputy sheriff in Douglas County, Ore., for 13 years.
Ed enjoyed fishing, camping and storytelling. He was active in the Chino Valley Little League for seven years and was known as Grandpa Ed in all youth sports around the community. He was also known for being generous and outspoken.
Ed is survived by his wife of 42 years, Elizabeth (Libby); his daughter, Sabrina Sutton; his grandson, Brian Sutton; and son-in-law Jeremy Sutton. He is also survived by brothers and sisters, especially Merle (Larry) Howard and Patricia Woodward; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4, 2011, at the Chino Valley Community Church, across from McDonald's. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Chino Valley Little League, P.O. Box 310, Chino Valley, AZ 86323.
