One of Wickenburg’s long time winter residents has died at the age of 82.
Fred G. Reed died at Wickenburg Community Hospital early Monday morning after an extended illness.
Born June 16, 1908 in Dectur, Ill., Reed maintained homes in Wayne, Ill., and Wickenburg. He had been a winter resident in Wickenburg for more than 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the Million Dollar Roundtable.
Reed was a pioneer in the field of employee benefit programs and started his own business in that field. He was active in that business, the Reed Ramsey, Inc. of Oakbrook, Ill. until his death. His son, Robert succeeds him at that company.
He was a graduate of the University of Chicago and member of the Dalta Kappa Epsilon fraternity.
Reed had a love of horse, he was Fieldmaster for the Wayne/DuPage Hunt Club and a member of the Dunham Hills Riding Club, referred to by many as the “old Indian scout”’, he spent many hours atop a horse riding the trails of Rancho de Los Caballeros in Wickenburg and exploring the desert.
An avid golfer, Reed was a member of St. Charles Country Club in St. Charles, Ill. and Los Caballeros Golf Club in Wickenburg.
His other interests include music. Local friends remember him sitting for hours, singing at the piano.
He married Vara Dredge on October 3, 1946 in Wayne, Ill. His wife survives.
Additional survivors include three sons; Frederick “Rick” Reed, St. Louis, Mo., Robert Reed, Wayne, Ill., and James Reed, Brea, Calif.; two daughters; Lynne Schroeder, San Diego, Calif., and Carol Fry, San Pedro, Calif.; 7 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.
Private graveside services precede a memorial service for Mr. Reed at the Little Home Church by the Wayside in Wayne, Ill. Dr. Wayne Barton will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contribution to the Wickenburg Regional Health Care Foundation Fred G. Reed Memorial.
