SCHMITZ, Gerald D.

The Daily Miner, kingman, Arizona - Published on Sunday, February 13, 2011 - On Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2011, Gerald entered into the gates of heaven. He was born to Bernice and Albert Schmitz on May 12, 1933, in Sidney, Mont.; he was the oldest sibling of four. Gerald is survived by his sister, Marlene Brenden of Dayton, Nev.; two half-sisters, Charlene Ford of Albuquerque, N.M., and Marsha Christiansen of Billings, Mont.; and special friend, Helen Graves. His and Marlene's father died in 1926 when they were very young. In 1952 he enlisted in the Air Force, traveling overseas, and was discharged in 1956. He attended Eastern Montana College in Billings, Mont., where he obtained a teacher's degree, teaching in Montana at the Bureau of Indian Affairs School before going into the Job Corps. His final teaching job for 25 years was for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in California. On retirement he moved to Kingman to care for his mother, Bernice, where he made many friends; he was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Prayer Group. Although a small man in stature, his heart was large and compassionate, always caring for those in dire need. He became a fixture at the downtown post office where he did many errands, even when he was on crutches. Daily he looked forward to coffee sessions with his friends, Lefty, Arnold and others. Thanks to Ken for being his chauffeur. He valued his friendship with Gerri and Ernie, his landlords at the Oasis Trailer Park. A true gentleman he was. No services will be held, but a private cremation in Billings is planned.
