James Austin Cope of Wickenburg died August 5 at Boswell Hospital. He was 79.
Mr. Cope, a 26-year resident of Arizona and a native of Pawnee City, Nebraska, was born October 4, 1912.
A graduate of Burchard High School, he moved here from Junction City, Kansas. Retired from the U.S. Army, Mr. Cope served in Europe during World War II. He landed on Omaha Beach one day after D Day.
He was stationed at Ft. Joseph T. Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas when war was declared and he served in Germany four years (not during the war) and Japan two years.
Mr. Cope had been a member of the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) in the U.S. Army for 19 years. He was chaplain of the American Legion and VFW for eight years here, until he underwent throat survey. He had been a continuous member of the American Legion and VFW since 1945.
Mr. Cope is survived by his wife Evelyn; sisters, Virginia Thiemann of Pawnee City, Nebraska, Betty Ayres of Lincoln, Nebraska and two nieces and three nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers Ronald J. Cope and Paul Cope.
Memorial services will be held in Pawnee City, Nebraska.
