The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ January 19, 1994, p. 2 Evelyn S. Cates of Wickenburg died January 12. She was 85. Mrs. Cates was born June 18, 1908 in Norwich, Ontario, Canada and had been a resident of Arizona for 43 years after moving here from Minnesota. She came to the United States as a 16-year-old and was an office manager for BBD&O advertising agency in Minneapolis. In 1950, she came to Wickenburg to marry Howard Sanborn and had resided here ever since. Mrs. Cates was preceded in death by her first husband Howard in 1956 and her second husband V.L. ”Tom” Cates in 1993. She had been the treasurer of the First Presbyterian Church of Wickenburg for 10 years and also had been a former deacon and elder of the church. Survivors include her son Mike Sanborn of Wickenburg; daughter Pat Carroll of Sutton, Alaska; daughter-in-law Phyllis Sanborn of Rochester, Minnesota; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 180 N. Adams St., in Wickenburg at 2:30 p.m. Thursday (January 20). Pastor Jim Longstreet will officiate. Contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church or Habitat for Humanity, 14405 N. Palm St., El Mirage, AZ 85335. All arrangements were made by Frey Funeral Home of Wickenburg.
