AMALONG, James Walter


Jan. 15, 1981. James Walter Amalong, Cochise County pioneer rancher, died Jan. 7, 1981 at the age of 81. He had been a resident of the Northern Cochise County Nursing Home since March 1979. Born March 8, 1899 on the Amalong home ranch in the Riggs Settlement, he was one of 9 children. His father, James Lewis Amalong, came to Arizona in 1876. From Dos Cabezas, he freighted between Fort Bowie, Tucson and Fort Grant. His mother, Charlotte J. Green, came with her family in 1878 to Tombstone and then settled near the sawmill in Pinery Canyon, Chiricahua Mountains, where her father contracted cutting logs for the sawmill (1879). His parents were married Jan. 23, 1882 and lived in Dos Cabezas where the first two children were born. In 1884 they took up a homestead at the mouth of Bonita Canyon, Chiricahua Mts. And lived there all of their lives. His father died October 1, 1913 and his mother December 25, 1934 After his father's death, Walter helped his mother on the ranch as well as cowboying for others. In 1926 he married Virginia May Lindsey and made their home on the neighboring ranch where they lived all of their lives. Besides ranching and farming, Walter loved his orchard, hunting and fishing. The Chiricahua Mts. Were his home and he liked the people. He worked at many jobs and retired from the Arizona State Highway Dept. in 1964. His wife preceded him in death in 1970. He is survived by a sister Cora Ingle of Eugene, Oregon; four sons and three daughters: Bob W. Amalong and Jerry J. Amalong of Tucson; James L. Amalong and Mrs. Jay (Gloria) Kuhn of Willcox; Mrs. Gene (Ellen) Glasscock, Douglas; Mrs. Roy (Mary) Lindsey, Elfrida; and Steve A. Amalong of the home ranch. He is also survived by thirty grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. Graveside services were held at El Dorado Community Cemetery, Riggs Settlement Jan. 10, 1981 with Rev. James M. Glasscock officiating, music by Eddie Flint, and a reading by Betty Jo Hart. Pallbearers: David Glasscock, Ronnie Glasscock, Walter Lindsey, Bill Lindsey, Doug Kuhn, Curtis Kuhn and Walter Lewis Amalong. Arrangements by Westlawn Chapel and Mortuary, Willcox. Arizona.
