CHARLES, Cody Joseph

Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, AZ Thursday, February 24, 2011 Cody Joseph Charles, 18, of Flagstaff died in a fatal car accident Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011 in Cameron. Mr. Charles was born Aug. 12, 1992, in Tuba City, to Rosita Charles and Jerry Danny Hanks. He was born of The Zuni Edgewater clan and born for the Coyote Pass People. Maternal grandparents are of The Many goats clan and Paternal grandparents of the Red Streak People. Cody attended Flagstaff High School. He was a unique person. He strove for everything in life, taking on many challenges he always wanted to be the best knowing his younger brothers and friends were looking up to him. He enjoyed the outdoors, mostly being around horses and working with cattle. He also enjoyed fishing, boating, swimming and hiking. After a hard day's work or play, he enjoyed his spaghetti dinner or dollar burgers. Mr. Charles is survived by his mother, Rosita Charles; stepfather Leroy Yellow; stepsister Christina Yellow; stepbrothers Paul Quamahongnewa, Rex Yellow, Irv Yellow from Second Mesa and Donavan Yellow from Cedar Ridge; grandmother Rosemary Roehm; uncle Devaniel Charles of Phoenix; aunt Jonnafay (Remnie) Kennedy of Hawaii; many cousins; great-grandmother Ramona Charles; father Jerry D. Hanks; brother Yonka Hanks; sisters Danlea Hanks, Hakina Hanks and Shalloh Hanks of Cedar Ridge; aunts Lorraine Dixon, Cecilia Bennett Priscilla Shorty, Theresa Hanks; uncles Raymond Dixon, Larry Hanks, Terry Hanks and Calvin Hanks, all of Cedar Ridge; grandpa Joe Hanks and stepgrandma Deborah Tsinnie; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his uncle, Tommy Charles; great-grandfather Ace Charles (World War II veteran) great-uncle Jerry Charles; great-aunt Nina Charles; aunt Victoria Singer; great-uncle Philip Charles; half sisters Mayta Hanks, Charmaine Smith; and grandmother Fannie Hanks. A memorial service will be Friday at 10 a.m. at Greenlaw Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the Flagstaff Citizens Cemetery. Reception will conclude services at the Cameron Chapter House.
