GORDON, Janis Arlene

(Maiden Name: Shultz)

The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Thursday, March 03, 2011 Janis Arlene Shultz Gordon died peacefully on Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at The Inn at Amethyst with her daughter Shawna and son-in-law Larry by her side. She is survived by her four children, Sharon Mensing, Shelley Glassman, Scott Gordon and Shawna Litman; her eight grandchildren and her two great-grandchildren. Janis was born on Feb. 7, 1934, in Grand Rapids, Mich. She valued education immensely, earning her master's in education. She was a history teacher at Franklin Junior High School in Massachusetts, the assistant registrar at Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts, an antique dealer, a book collector, and gave jeep tours in the Arizona high country. She was married to Ron "Flash" Gordon for 48 years. Jan called Sharon, Mass., her home for more than 20 years, enjoying all that Lake Massapoag and her well-tended yard had to offer. She loved gardening, tennis, hiking and entertaining family and friends. Her love of the city of Prescott, Ariz., where she lived in her later years overflowed through her community involvement. She was a very active volunteer, sharing her musical talents on the keyboard with nursing home residents throughout Prescott. She coordinated the Acker Musical Showcase in Prescott for many years, and was a very involved member of Friends of the Prescott Public Library. Yes, Janis loved the city of Prescott so much so that she even named her beloved Sheltie after the city! She saw a great importance in family gatherings and always held large and lovely holiday celebrations. Several family reunions were orchestrated by her and many treasured memories created. In the wake of the terrible disease, which took her memories and her life, she left four children who have banded together and become a close family unit. Thank you, Mom - we love you and you will be missed. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Janis A. Gordon Memorial Fund, Alzheimer's Association, http://act.alz.org.
