Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, Arizona - Published Saturday, March 12, 2011 - Jane F. Clapp, 93 years old, of Sanford, Maine died Sunday, March 6, 2011 at the Newton Center in Sanford. Jane was born in Norwich, N.Y. on September 11, 1917. She was the daughter of the late Adrian and Charlotte (Lindley) Ford. She was raised in Norwich, attended Norwich schools, and was a graduate of Norwich High School. Following high school Jane worked for a brief period of time at a pharmaceutical company in Norwich. Jane was married to Richard DeRoss Clapp, and together they moved from Norwich to Auburn, N.Y. and began a family. While in Auburn, Jane worked as a legal secretary as well as an administrative assistant for the First National Bank of Auburn. One of Jane’s most notable accomplishments was being the first woman ever elected to the position of Treasurer for the City of Auburn. Upon her retirement, Jane and her husband Richard moved to Lake Havasu City. Jane led an active life. She enjoyed vacationing with her family, square dancing, and was said to be a very talented quilter. Predeceasing Jane was her husband Richard. Surviving is a daughter Sharon (Guy) LaClair of S. Berwick, Maine; a son, Morris (Martha) Clapp of Supply, N.C.; four grandchildren, Kristine Kerr of S. Berwick, Maine, Michael (Stacey) Martin of Erie, Colo., Amy (Michael) Hodgeof Rochester, N.Y., James (Erinn) Clapp of Rochester, N.Y., and six great-grandchildren, Cameron, Payton, Jonathon, Hailey, Eve, and Everett. At Jane’s request all services will be held privately for the family. Care for the Clapp family has been entrusted to the staff of the J.S. Pelkey Funeral Home of Kittery, Maine.
