Raymond Andrew Solheim, 74, of Mesa passed away Thursday, January 15, 2004 at his home.
He was born May 26, 1929 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, to Olaf Christian Solheim and Ella Eldora Lunda.
As a young man Ray joined the United States Navy and saw action during the Korean War aboard the destroyer, USS Cunningham. During battle stations, Ray served as one of the captain's three telephone talkers who communicated with, and transferred orders, to the entire ship.
Following retirement, Ray and his wife, Jeanne, served a full-time LDS mission in Indiana from 1997-1999. He later enjoyed service as a temple worker from 2002 until the time of his passing. Ray was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and his presence as family patriarch will be missed.
Ray is survived by his wife, Jeanne, a sister, Alice Thiessen; a brother, Stan Solheim; children: Raylene Hinckley , Karen Waugh, Donella Stahn, Glenn, and Matthew; stepchildren: Danne Fernau, J. Denise Sommerville, Christine Black and 33 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 7 step grandchildren, and 11 step-great-grandchildren. Ray was pre-deceased by son, Eric.
Visitation was Sunday, January 18, 2004, at Bunkers Desert View Chapel, 9702 E. Apache Trail, Mesa. Services: Monday at the Crismon Ward Chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 454 N. Crismon
Rd. Mesa. Graveside services were Tuesday, January 20, 2004 at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona, 23029 N. Cave Creek Road, Phoenix. Bunker Mortuary handled arrangements. (480) 986-1616)
