Glen William Asbeck was born July 30, 1938, in Sidney, Mont., the son of Hugo and Nelda (Christensen) Asbeck. He was raised on the family farm in Fairview, Mont. While growing up, Glen learned to farm by working beside his father. In high school, he played football and was active in the FFA. At the age of 18, he joined the National Guard, serving for several years.
On Aug. 8, 1959, Glen married his high school sweetheart, Louise Weaver. To this union four children were born. Glen was a dedicated farmer and loved his work. He was always proud of his straight rows. He was innovative and envisioned how to build something better. He invented many helpful devices to make his job run a little smoother. Kind and generous, he was always willing to lend a hand to a friend or stranger.
Glen spent the last 17 years wintering in Lake Havasu City, at the Islander Resort. He was a cook at the BBQ’s, built handicap ramps for those in need, and was the “go-to” guy for tools and fixing things. Glen loved the wood shop at the Islander and was instrumental in getting it expanded and making sure that things were in working order.
Over the years, Glen enjoyed numerous activities including golfing. During his years in Arizona, he also came to enjoy clowning, fishing, and especially loved riding in the desert on his “Yama-Deere”.
Glen wore many hats including: farmer, business manager, agronomist, engineer, metal and woods craftsman, artist, and visionary. He was a loving father, dedicated husband, and the best Papa in the world to his grandchildren.
Glen loved life and fought until the end. He struggled through many illnesses over the years, never complaining.
Glen was a member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, 4th Degree Knights, Moose, Elks, and Eagles. He served on numerous boards over the years including: Stockman Bank, Irrigation (Board of Control), Sugar Beet Growers Association, Church Council, Land Bank, Foundation for Community Care, head of the woodshop at the Islander, and co-founder of the WannaBe golf tournament.
Glen Asbeck passed away peacefully March 6, 2011, at Sunrise Hospital in Las Vegas, Nev., from lung cancer. His wife and children were by his side in his final days on this earth.
Glen is survived by: his loving wife of 51 years, Louise; and their children, Mitch (Kathy) Asbeck, Billings, Mont., Gene (Tanya) Asbeck, Sidney, Mont., Kemp (Laurie) Asbeck, Elkhorn, Wis., Nicole (Tim) Dvorak, Grand Forks, N.D.; grandchildren, Jessica Johnson, Monica, Melissa and Katie Asbeck, Samuel and Hayden Dvorak; great-granddaughter Aurellia Johnson; mother, Nelda Asbeck; brother, Hugo (Elaine) Asbeck Jr.; sister, Elaine (John) Whitman; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Glen was preceded in death by his father, Hugo Asbeck Sr.; and in-laws, Ward and Beulah Weaver.
Mass of the Christian Burial is at 10 a.m., today at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church with Father Jim O’Neil and Father Ned Shinnick presiding. Wake services were at 7 p.m., Monday at the Fulkerson Memorial Chapel. Interment will be in the Sidney Cemetery under the direction of Fulkerson Funeral Home.
