Augustine "Gus" W. Affayroux Jr., 72, of Kingman passed away Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Kingman Regional Medical Center. He was born May 7, 1938, in Baltimore, son of the late Augustine Sr. and Rose Affayroux.
Gus joined the U.S. Army at the age of 17 and served for 22 years, reaching the rank of Sergeant First Class. During his career, he was proud to have served in the Special Forces and the 11th Airborne. He served with distinction during the Vietnam War and was awarded the Bronze Star for bravery.
After retiring from the military, he moved to North Plainfield, N.J., where he worked as a systems analyst. He lived there for 25 years, where he enjoyed raising his family, working (and playing) with computers, bowling and reading. As a member of the Elks and the VFW, he gave back to the community. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Kingman in August of 2001 to be closer to their grandchildren who he loved and adored. He liked camping and traveling, making several cross-country trips to visit his family members on the East Coast, as well as taking an adventure-filled trip to Alaska. As a member of Kingman Presbyterian Church, he made many dear friends. He worked for a number of years as the compositor on the church's newsletter and was always willing to help people with their PCs.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Dottie Affayroux; his son, Frank Andrews and his wife Linda; his daughter, Susan Williams; his grandsons, Nicholas and Eric and their father, Alan; his sister, Roseanne Werner; and his brother, John Richard Affayroux. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 19, at the Kingman Presbyterian Church, 2425 Detroit Ave.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Kingman Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 2425 Detroit Ave., Kingman, AZ 86401.
