Domenick Zellitti, a native of Durango, Colo., died March 7, 2011, in Carmel, Calif. He was 87. Domenick was one of seven children born to Frank and Concetta Zellitti. Nick, his brother Frank, and his papa Frank, owned the Morning Star Coal Mine, five miles west of Durango. Nick and his siblings were the first generation from this Zellitti family to be born in America.
Upon moving to California, Nick worked in the Aerospace industry for years working on the Titan Missile and other aerospace projects. Later, Nick became a general building contractor developing homes and businesses in California. Being adventurous, Nick and Mary Bee joined the Peace Corp and were stationed in the Virgin Islands and Africa for several years. Nick always loved Durango and lived there several months out of the year, enjoying family, friends, scenery and fishing. Nick and Mary spent their winters in Lake Havasu City, enjoying walking and card games with many friends they met throughout the years.
Nick was raised to be proud of his Italian heritage. He had a fantastic sense of humor, always playing a prank on someone and making us all laugh. He was deeply loved and will be truly missed.
Nick is preceded in death by six brothers and sisters: Albert Sr., Frank, Concetta, John, Mary, Albert; and his mother and father, Frank and Concetta Zellitti. Nick is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 69 years, Mary Bee; his two sons, Daniel, of Roseville, Calif., and David (Madonna), of Carmel, Calif.; four precious grand-daughters, all of California; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be a celebration of Nick’s life in Durango March 26, at 3 p.m., in the Parish Hall of Saint Mark’s Episcopal Church, 3rd Avenue and 9th Street. Everyone is invited to speak at the service and then to share memories and celebrate his life at a reception at the church, where an Italian dinner will be served. Burial will be at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. Cremation has taken place.
