Herbert Hamilton Phelps of Circle City died July 1 at Camelot Community Hospice in Peoria. He was 91. Mr. Phelps was born January 12, 1904 in Los Angeles, California. He lived in Arizona for two years, coming here from Colorado.
Mr. Phelps worked for the U.S. Forestry Service, first in the California Division of Forestry and then the U.S. Division of Forestry. Following his time in the forestry service, he worked as a carpenter and an electrician. He was the Scout Master for many years for Boy Scout Troop 502 in Ojai, California. He was involved with the Scouts for over 20 years.
Mr. Phelps and his wife, Linnie Idean, spent many years traveling together. He also enjoyed the outdoors life, including fishing, hunting and rock collecting. Mr. Phelps would polish the rocks and had quite a collection both inside and outside of his home. He also enjoyed stamp collecting and had quite a large collection.
He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Linnie Idean of Circle City; son and daughter-in-law Herbert Lloyd and Barbara Phelps of Lakeside, California; step-son Goteti Krishmanurty and his wife Mary of Northride, California; step-son Philip Blackwell of Madren, Iowa; four grandchildren, Dan Phelps of San Diego, California, David Phelps of Lake Elsinore, California, Pati Phelps of Lakeside, California and Carl Phelps of El Cajon, California; 14 great-grandchildren; two nieces, Linda Thornburg of Bakersfield, California and Loretta. He was preceded in death by his parents, Parley and Mary Phelps; one sister, Evelyn Deon; and two brothers, Frank and Lloyd Phelps.
Private family services will be held in California at a later date.
