O'RILEY, Vernon E., LCDR


The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Monday, March 21, 2011 Vernon E. O'Riley, LCDR USN RET, passed away on March 18, 2011, in Prescott, Ariz. He was born on Oct. 29, 1924, in Skidmore, Mo., to Fred and Hildred O'Riley. He spent his early years in Waukon, Iowa. Vernon is credited with 27 years of Naval Service from 1944-1971 during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. In addition to coaching the All Navy Basketball Champions on the USS Intrepid he also coached high school and college basketball in Waukon, Iowa and Great Bridge, Va. He was a PGA Golf Professional in Nebraska, Kansas and Arizona. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree and his Master's Degree from University of Iowa, and his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business from Naval Post Graduate School, Monterey, Calif. Vernon is survived by his beloved wife Maxine; and six children, Janice, Michael (Lisa Lynn), Gary (Connie), Kevin, Lisa (Matthew) and Robert; his sisters, Elizabeth, Colleen and Joyce. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 25, 2011, at noon at St. Germaine Catholic Church. He will be laid to rest with military honors at Heritage Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or to the donor's choice.
