Riley Willoughby, of Wickenburg, died September 18 in Wickenburg. He was 68. Mr. Willoughby was born September 16, 1927 in Mt. Sterling, Kentucky. He had lived in Arizona for three years, coming here from California.
Mr. Willoughby retired from the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant, after serving more than 20 years. He was stationed in Korea during the Korean conflict where he received the Purple Heart serving as a parachutist. He served for one more year in Thailand where he helped to build the base from the ground up. During his service years, Mr. Willoughby also drove bus for children with learning difficulties. A special bond developed between those children and himself.
After Mr. Willoughby retired, his passion was for fishing. He also enjoyed bowling and traveling.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Mary of Wickenburg; daughter Linda Willoughby of Birmingham, Alabama, Brenda Duncan of Washington, and Cathy Vaughn of Tennessee; son David Willoughby of Turlock, California; grandchildren Pomeca and Nathan Vaughn of Tennessee, Joshua and Samantha Elliots of Tennessee, Raine Willoughby of Turlock, California, Kimberly and Kurtis Duncan of Washington, and Shawn Willoughby of Birmingham, Alabama.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in California.
Frey Funeral Home and Cremation Service handled all the local arrangements.
