David G. Deacon, of Congress, died December 17 in Congress. He was 77. Mr. Deacon was born January 25, 1918 in San Bernardino, California. He had lived in Arizona for 77 years, moving here from California at the age of three months.
Mr. Deacon was an electrician, cowboy and rancher. He was a member of the Hillside Bible School and the Page Elks Lodge No. 2498 and was one of the first settlers in Bagdad.
In 1957, Mr. Deacon moved to Page to help build the Glen Canyon Dam. He resided there for 30 years, during which he was the first to start the saddle club and rodeo, and was known by many in the Page area for rescuing numerous people. He and his late wife, Polly, were also known for always having a house full of children. Mr. Deacon, an avid hunter and fisherman, retired to Congress in 1991.
Survivors include his daughters, Barbara MacDonald of Page, and Pat Schwartz of Warminster, Pennsylvania; son Buck Deacon of Congress; and sister, Shirley Svob of Tucson. He was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Polly, in September 1992.
Graveside services will be held Saturday, December 23 at 10 a.m. at the Congress Cemetery. The Rev. Gayland Neshem will officiate.
