SYKES, Juanita (Joyce)

The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ March 4, 1998, p. 2 & 6 Juanita “Joyce” Sykes of Wickenburg died February 26 in Wickenburg. She Was 64. Mrs. Sykes was born September 6, 1933 in Scott City, Kansas. She had lived in Arizona for the past eight years, moving to Wickenburg in 1990 from California. Mrs. Sykes grew up in Kansas until she moved to the San Diego area with her parents while in her teens. On October 20, 1951, Joyce married Earl Leroy Sykes of Montana and they settled in Valley Center, California where they lived until Earl’s death in 1990. Joyce served as a bookkeeper for Earl’s horse-shoeing business. Shortly after her husband’s death Joyce moved to the colorful town of Wickenburg, where she worked as a waitress and found many wonderful new friends. She had many interests and hobbies, including many years spent hunting for old bottles and exploring ghost towns of the West. She also was involved in raising and showing horses for many years and won a number of trophies for her efforts. Joyce will be best be remembered for her devoted love of family and friends and who had compassion and concern always for others, even with her illness She was a wonderful person. Survivors include her brother Roy Hale and his wife Jane and family; sister Thelma Johnson and her husband Howard and family; son Michael Sykes and wife Shannon, and their children Jenna and Jesse; daughter Norma Forsythe and her children Micky ad Misty, who called Joyce “Hoot Enanny”; and numerous other relatives and friends. Joyce was preceded in death by her brother Ralph and her husband Earl. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday, March 6 at Frey Funeral Home Chapel. From there, Joyce will be brought home to Valley Center Cemetery in California for a service there. The family wishes to extend special thanks to the Wickenburg Regional Hospital Extended Care Unit for the wonderful care Joyce received while she was there.
