SWIFT, Charles Phillip

The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ June 24, 1998, p. 14 Charles Phillip Swift of Longmont, Colorado died June 18 in Longmont, Colorado. He was 83. Mr. Swift was born October 14, 1914 in Lyons, Colorado. He was educated in the Lyons School system and graduated from Lyons High School in 1932. He joined the Navy in 1937 and served aboard ship continuously for nine years, seeing duty in China Seas and action in the Pacific Theater in World War II at Bougainville, Coral Sea, Midway, Guadalcanal, Tulagi, Solomon Islands and the Battle of the Aleutians at Attu. He served his country with distinction and was commended by the Navy for his outstanding work. Mr. Swift served aboard the USS Phelps, USS Bremerton, USS Iowa, USS Kula Gulf and the USS Virgo. His last duty was Chief in Charge, Naval Post Office, Yokosuka, Japan. He married Roberta Smith on November 15, 1942. On his retirement from the Navy in 1957 he moved with his family to the North St. Vrain Canyon above Lyons. He worked at Rocky Flats, Golden, Colorado as foreman of services, retiring in 1977 when he and his wife moved to Allenspark, Colorado. They wintered in Southwest Utah, settling there in 1982 until 1997, when they returned to Colorado. Mr. Swift was a member of Westview Presbyterian Church, Longmont, Colorado, St. Vrain Lodge No. 23 A.F.& A.M. of Colorado, the Fleet Reserve Association and St. Vrain Valley VFW Post 10660 of Lyons, Colorado. He was formerly a longtime member of the Old Stone Congregational Church of Christ in Lyons. Mr. Swift is survived by his wife, Roberta, of Longmont; sons C. Phillip Swift, Jr. and wife Charlene of Wickenburg, and Dolph Swift and his fiancée Cheryl Thode of Estes Park, Colorado. He is also survived by his niece, Pat Swift Finleon of Louisville, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
