The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ March 22, 1984, p. 19 Accident kills Las Vegas man A 20-year-old Las Vegas man was killed in a collision with a tractor-trailer rig on U. S. Highway 93, approximately 31 miles North of Wickenburg, Saturday at 11:55 p.m. Wickenburg Department of Public Safety Sgt. Greg Eaverson said Christopher Callis, 20 of Las Vegas, was pronounced dead on the scene after the vehicle he was driving collided head on with a tractor-trailer rig driven by Herb Oldfield, 45, a resident of Albuquerque. Eavenson said the investigation, conducted by Yarnell DPS Officer Len Rheaume, determined that Callis, who was traveling Southbound from Las Vegas to Phoenix, evidently fell asleep causing the 1981 Ford Mustang he was driving to veer across the center line colliding with the Northbound International tractor-trailer owned by Arkansas Best Freight, of Fort Smith, Ark. Injured in the accident was Callis' fiancee, Kathy Clendenen, 19, also for Las Vegas. Clendenen was airlifted by the DPA Ranger helicopter to St. Joseph's Hospital in Phoenix where she was held for observation and released on Sunday. Initial reports stated that Clendenen sustained head and back injuries. Eaverson said Oldfield was not injured and had been wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident. Both vehicles sustained extensive damage, Rheaume reported.
