The Daily Miner, Kingman, AZ - Published on April 1, 2011 - Carmen G. Maya, 98, died at home Monday, March 14, 2011, in Kingman. She was born Feb. 14, 1913, in Williams to Felipe and Monica Gurule. She married Sebastian Maya on July 2, 1929, in Williams. The family relocated to Ajo, Ariz., from Clarkdale in 1950 and lived there for 61 years. At the time of her death, she was making her home in Kingman with her son, Pedro "Pete" and daughter-in-law, Flora Maya. A homemaker, Carmen loved to cook, make crafts, and play word games, cards and dominos. She also loved to crochet and make an occasional visit to her hometown of Williams and the corner lot where the house her father built once stood. She enjoyed sharing her childhood memories and stories with her family, whom she loved so much and was featured in a July 2010 article in the Williams-Grand Canyon News. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mrs. Maya was preceded in death by her husband, Sebastian Maya; her identical twin sister, Carolina; grandsons, Michael Rau and Phillip Ward; and great-grandson, Shane Williams. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Angel and Imelda Maya of Ajo and Pedro and Flora Maya of Kingman; by her daughters and sons-in-law, Teresa and Harold Rau of Phoenix, Elisa Maya Humphrey of Glendale, Amelia and Ivon Favot of Ajo, Jessie and William Ward of Ajo, Consuelo and Jose Ruiz of Phoenix and Yolanda and Ross Anderson of Bisbee; and by her 24 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren. Visitation at Douglass Funeral Home and rosary at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church were Monday, March 21. Mass was celebrated Tuesday morning, March 22, by Father Peter Nwachukwu. Burial was next to her husband in Ajo Cemetery. Pallbearers were Carlos Maya, William Ward, Dominic Guffey, Joseph Vargas, Sebastian Baraza, James Williams III, and Peter and David Anderson. Arrangements were made by Douglass Funeral Home of Ajo. We love and miss you, Mom, Nana.
