Wylie “Perry” Underdown, 80, a longtime area businessman died Aug. 10 in Wickenburg Community Hospital.
A charter member of the Prescott Volunteer Fire Department and Wickenburg Elks Lodge BPOE No. 2160, Underdown, was also a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge in Prescott and the founder of Wickenburg Lumber in 1948.
Underdown was born Jan. 13, 1904 and moved to Arizona in 1917 from Texas. Settling in Prescott, he moved to Wickenburg in 1948 and founded the family lumber yard. As a longtime Wickenburg business man he was also a partner in Red-E-Mix Concrete, Inc., of Wickenburg, with his surviving son, Dave Underdown.
He is also survived by two daughters, Louella Johnson, of Wickenburg, and Gerldine “Gerry” Kelley, of Prescott; two brothers, Norman Underdown, of Gravette, Ark., and Lee Underdown, of Tucson; 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The visitation was Monday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Wickenburg Funeral Home Chapel and services were Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the chapel with Bob Heiens officiating as assisted by Bret Hammett.
Interment was in the Wickenburg Cemetery next to his wife, Ethel.
