SPIRES, Helen Fulkerson

Helen Fulkerson Spires, 92. died June 27, 2003. She was born in Fredericktown, Missouri on 15 February 1911. Helen was a pioneer Tempean and long time resident of Phoenix. She came to Tempe with her family in 1926. She graduated from Tempe High School in 1928 and from Arizona State Teachers College at Tempe in 1932. Helen was a teacher in Phoenix area elementary schools for more than 40 years. She and husband Woody enjoyed their second home at Alpine with many summers of fishing and horseback riding. Woody preceded her in death. Helen is survived by her niece, Virginia Howard Tennant, of Los Osos, CA. and nephew, James M. Howard, of Tucson, and by their families. A memorial service will be held in the early fall. Internment is at Tempe Double Buttes Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the First Baptist Church of Tempe, where she was a life long member, or to the Salvation Army, where she spent many hours of volunteer time.
