Verna "Pinky" Mae Thompson, 49, died April 4, 2011, in Avondale. She was born June 6, 1961, in Winslow, to Esther and Thomas Thompson, Sr. She got her nickname the day she was born when a nurse said "she is pink."
She had a unique laugh and loved playing Navajo shoe games, card games and cooking. She was always willing to help others.
She is survived by her loving companion, Xavier Valenzuela, who took great care of her until the end, loving her and never leaving her side; two sisters, Loretta "Dixie" Thompson (John Willie) and Tina Todacheenie (Alvin); two brothers, Thomas Thompson, Jr. (Matilda) and Arnold J. Thompson (Patricia McCabe); mother Esther Thompson; three daughters, Pamela (Jason), Audrey and Charonda; and three grandsons.
She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Thompson, Sr.; and her beloved first companion and father of her daughters, Ben Johnson, Jr.
Graveside service will be today at 1:30 p.m., at Desert View Cemetery, Winslow. Visitation will be held at Greer's Mortuary Chapel, Winslow, today at 12:30 p.m.
