Arizona Daily Sun, Flagstaff, AZ Friday, April 08, 2011 Mel Hebets, 85, died April 4, 2011, in Flagstaff. Mr. Hebets was born March 22, 1926, in Phoenix. He was one of four brothers who attended and graduated from St. Mary's High School in Phoenix. He was a World War II veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Menard. In 1953, he married Peggy Thompson. They lived in Phoenix until the fall of 1967, when they moved their family to Flagstaff. He was a businessman and active member of the community. His passion was his wife and five children. His other interests were tennis and reading. His many volunteer efforts included Flagstaff Little League, St. Vincent DePaul and the Flagstaff Family Food Center. Mr. Hebets is survived by his brother, William Hebets of Phoenix; his children, Pam (Scott) Anderson, Jeff (Lexine) Hebets, Patti (Kirk) Rowdabaugh, Scott Hebets and Brad (Celeste) Hebets; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; as well as a very large extended family. Rosary will be recited Thursday, April 14, at 7 p.m. and the funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, April 15, at 10 a.m., both at Nativity Catholic Church in downtown Flagstaff. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Northland Hospice or St. Vincent de Paul. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.norvelowensmortuary.com.
