‘ Lou Gehrig’s Disease’ takes life of former ambulance chief
Ken Fovargue, who served as director of the Wickenburg Ambulance Service from 1984-84, died in early June in his home in Bullhead City.
Fovargue, who was 42, died from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly know has “Lou Gehrigs Disease.” He had battle the disease for a number of years, which eventually led to his retirement from the Bullhead City Fire Department.
Fovargue worked his way up to Captain with the BCFD, and was a fourth generation firefighter. His list of accomplishments with the department included becoming a paramedic, a certified driver, and a rescue specialist involving rescues from cliffs and mines. He was placed on full medical retirement in 1995, after his illness made it impossible for him to continue his duties.
Fovargue was very active in youth oriented projects, and despite his confinement to a wheelchair in the last two years of his life, still coached Little League baseball. He also was able to do all of the work and preparation for a State Land Improvement Grant for $30,000 to Bullhead City for park improvements. Fovargue is survived by his wife, Karen, and two children, daughter Kendall, 10, and son, Logan, 13.
