‘Friends’ pioneer,
Hinkel, dies at 73
She also served as
WCSC member for

Longtime Wickenburg patron of the arts and community activist Gloria Hinkel died unexpectedly this week in Wickenburg.
Mrs. Hinkel, 73, was a founding member and one of the tireless workers and promoters of Friends of Music (FOM), a fine arts organization which has brought free concerts to the community for the past 23 years.
She served as president of FOM for many years, and was given a special award by the group its 20th anniversary year in 1993.
In March 1989, Mrs. Hinel accepted a Governor’s Award on behalf of Friends of Music from Gov. Rose Mofford, at the annual Arizona Commission on the Arts awards dinner in Scottsdale, The award was given for significant contributions to the growth and development of cultural life in Wickenburg, Arizona, “for which Mrs. Hinkel was given much of the credit.
“She’s going to be missed,” said Carol Arnett, a longtime co-worker with Mrs. Hinkel in FOM and vice president of the organization. “When I got the call (about her passing), I couldn’t believe it.
‘She was … the sparkplug of the group. The driving force behind it. She was always full of ideas and was a tireless worker.
In addition to her work in Friends of Music, Mrs. Hinkel was also very active in the Wickenburg Community Services Corporation, a charitable organization which supplements government funding for needy individuals and families in and around Wickenburg. She served as a memver of the WCSC Board since its founding more than 20 years ago.
Mrs. Hinkel died Aug. 18 in Wickenburg.
She was born Dec. 12, 1923 in Brooklyn, N. Y. Before moving to Wickenburg in 1977, she had worked as a copy editor for the Philadelphia Enquirer and in advertising for the J. C. Penny Co. in that city and in New York. She won numerous awards for her work while with J. C. Penny.
Besides being active in the Friends of Music and the Wickenburg Community Services Corp., Mrs. Hinkel also served on the Town or Wickenburg’s Planning and Zoning Commission for 11 years.
Survivors include her husband Kenneth Hinkel of Wickenburg; son Pete Evans of Scottsdale; daughter Eugenia Ann Griffith of Colorado; and brother, Edward Vasso of California.
Services are still pending.

Gloria Hinkel of Wickenburg, died Aug. 18 in Wickenburg. She was 73.
Mrs. Hinkel was born Dec. 10, 1923 in Brooklyn, N. Y. She had lived in Arizona for the past 27 years, coming from New York.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Hinkel of Wickenburg; daughter Eugenia Ann Griffith of Colorado; son Peter Evans Hinkel of Scottsdale; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug 28 in the Wickenburg Community Center.
Fr. John Vogt, Kevin Coe and Carol Arnett will be guest speakers.
