TOMS, Robert Harold


The Arizona Republic, Phoenix, Arizona Sunday, July 6, 2003 Robert Harold Toms, retired Fire Chief passed away on June 27, 2003 in Phoenix Arizona. He was born to Harry Albert Toms and Patricia Ellen Moriairity on January 21, 1927 in Detroit, MI. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Gunner's mate 3rd class on the ship U.S.S. Riely 579 from July 25, 1944 to June 11, 1946. He started on the Detroit Fire Dept. February 23, 1948. He ended his career as Captain and Training Academy Instructor, retiring March 1, 1975. On July 14, 1977, he helped organize and establish the Northville Twp. Michigan Fire Dept, where he served as Fire Chief for 15 years. In his honor, Northville Twp. dedicated Fire State #3 in his name. He is survived by his beloved wife Loretta of 53 years, 6 children and 15 grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Fredrick Toms of Panama City, FL and their families. A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 739 W. Erie Street, Chandler AZ on Thursday, July 10th at 10am.
